Why vinyl plank flooring could be right for you

If you’ve ever wanted the look of wood but couldn’t have it because of moisture issues, now you can because luxury vinyl plank flooring is a true-to-life echo of hardwood. LVP floors, as they are sometimes referred to, are a form of luxury vinyl (LVF). It is cut into planks to mimic floorboards and is waterproof, durable, and low maintenance. Ideal for wet areas like the bathroom but stylish enough to be installed in living rooms and bedrooms, the material can also be cut into groutable squares called LVT flooring, echo marble, granite other stones. At the same time, tiles come in a wide range of brilliant colors and patterns.

Waterproof flooring vs. water-resistant

When something is impervious to liquid, it's constructed of completely waterproof materials, in this case, vinyl, and the vinyl composites core. It is often impenetrable from bottom to top, meaning it can be submerged, such as in an appliance flood or spill. When something is resistant to water, it is repellent but will eventually break barriers and absorb, stain and ripple unless it's wiped quickly.

Advantages of vinyl plank flooring

These benefits apply to all luxury vinyl flooring (LVF), whether in plank or tile form. Images are taken with 3D photography, so they're clear and vibrant, with knots, grains, swirls, and wormholes in full display. All LVF has micro beveling and embossing to add depth, dimension, and textured appearances, such as wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered or distressed with the design option to cut gives it extra seams, which many feel adds to the realism.

Vinyl plank (and all LVF) is often thicker than standard sheets, which gives it a more rigid feeling and extreme durability. There are at least four layers, including a top, transparent, strong melamine wear layer that protects the floors from scratches and scuffs. If you're installing in a busy, heavily foot trafficked room, you may want the wear layer to measure at least 20-mils.

It is easy to maintain with daily sweeping and periodic mopping. Use a manufacturer-approved cleaner and avoid wax, shine-promoting ones as they can dull. Installation can be a fast and uncomplicated floating floor where pieces click together, mat, and hover over the subfloor with no nails or glue.
